To my delight, many of the farms in rural England had these step-throughs in their fences.  It is a leftover from the Middle Ages, when it was made a law that all walkers could take the shortest route between two towns--even if that meant they had to cross someone's private property.

Never in my life had I seen such an array of crosses and Stars of David.  At times it seemed they were endless.  And yet they were but a small percentage of thgose who died in that area.

It was fall, the harvest season, when I crossed France.  Fresh, plump fuits and vegetables everywhere I went. These grapes were do doubt destined to be made into what France is most famous for, it's wines.
